It took me a little longer than usual to write Peppa’s blog—because truthfully, I’m still figuring her out. Peppa is a 5-year-old Yorkie girl who’s full of contradictions, and I’ve been slowly earning her trust since the moment she arrived.

From the very start, Peppa didn’t strike me as shy. She walked in with confidence, her tiny frame exploring every corner of the house, completely unfazed by the pack of pups we had over the busy 4th of July weekend. She wasn’t nervous around the other dogs and didn’t avoid them—but she also wasn’t exactly jumping into playtime. Every now and then, I noticed a little drool coming from the side of her mouth, which, after checking with her mom, I learned was a sign of stress for her.

So, I gave her space. I didn’t corner her, didn’t insist she join the group for potty breaks, and let her find her own rhythm. But just as I’d assume she wanted solitude, she’d suddenly be curious again—quietly observing the pack, inching closer as if deciding whether to join the fun.

Despite her mixed signals, one thing was clear: Peppa’s appetite was in top shape. She had no hesitation finishing her meals—and often tried to sneak a bite from others. She happily accepted any treat I offered, which definitely didn’t align with a truly stressed pup.’

This back-and-forth carried on throughout the day: shy and reserved one moment, intrigued and sociable the next. And while she kept a little distance when I tried to pet her, she surprised me later by hopping right up on the bed, curling up beside my neck, and falling asleep like she’d known us forever. That’s become her nightly ritual—cuddling close, head on the pillow, making herself completely at home.

Peppa’s mom mentioned she’d love to have some studio photos taken of her, but I always make sure a pup is fully comfortable before introducing them to the lights and setup. After four days of slowly building trust, I decided to give it a try—and I’m so glad I did. Turns out I may have overthought it: Peppa was a natural in front of the camera. Maybe it was the treats, maybe the calm setup—but she stood still, alert, and totally stole the spotlight.
We ended up capturing some beautiful shots of her, which I’ll be sharing soon. Peppa is a complex little soul—cautious but curious, distant but loving when the time feels right. And that’s what makes hosting her such a special experience.
