Cola: Right at Home

At this point, Cola isn’t just a guest—she’s part of the family. She’s completely settled in, treating our home like her own with the kind of ease that only comes from feeling truly safe and loved. She naps wherever she pleases, knows exactly where to do her business, and floats around the kitchen like a hopeful little food critic. (She hasn’t had much luck convincing us to sneak her anything outside of her normal diet—but not for lack of trying!)

Yesterday brought a sweet surprise for her: a playdate with Mr. Ferguson, our spunky little terrier mix who’s been a regular with us for the past few months. The two hit it off right away, running around the yard like they’ve known each other for ages. Cola was in her element—ears perked, tail wagging, and heart full.

Today has been a much quieter day. With just our two Schnauzer babies in the house, the energy was calm and relaxed. Mid-morning, though, Cola began making a strange whimpering sound. My first instinct was to take her out for a potty break, though she had just been not long before. But when the sound continued afterward, my concern grew. Was she feeling homesick? Did something upset her tummy?

Then it clicked.

She wasn’t sad or sick—she was yearning. Yearning for the two big beef bones we had left out in the courtyard! I let her out to choose one, and she trotted over like a pup on a mission, carefully selecting her prize. She spent the better part of the next hour gnawing at it with determination, even though it held up far better than her usual tennis balls.

Later in the afternoon, the same whimpering sound started up again. This time, I was quicker on the draw—it was the other bone she had her eye on. I couldn’t help but laugh. Cola clearly knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to let us know.

Her appetite remains strong—especially at dinner time, where she eats with gusto, barely lifting her head for a breath. She’s also drinking plenty of water, keeping me busy refilling the big 4-liter water bowl throughout the day.

And perhaps the most telling sign of how at-home she feels? She’s been sleeping soundly on our bed every night, spoiled by my wife who usually reserves that privilege for very special occasions. Cola earned it.

She continues to be an absolute joy to have around, and we’re soaking up every moment with her.
