Cola’s Surprise Return – The Smile That Came Running Back

What a surprise this weekend turned out to be! It’s been a few weeks since Cola left our little doggy haven, but she has never left my heart. So when I got a last-minute message from her mom saying Cola needed a weekend stay—my heart just about burst with joy. And the reason? Her mom had a sudden business trip, and Cola’s dad? Oh, just a casual call-up to THE MAJOR LEAGUE! Yes—THE major league! What an incredible moment for their family, and somehow I feel like I got to share in the celebration with the return of my favorite Bernedoodle.

When her mom arrived that evening, leash-free and all, Cola dashed to our front door like a greyhound on a mission! The speed, the smile, the sparkle in her eyes—it melted me instantly. It was so clear she remembered us and was genuinely thrilled to be back. And for someone who’s not part of her “everyday” family, that feeling of being remembered and missed… it’s priceless. She made me feel so proud and so touched all over again.

As soon as she stepped inside, it was like she never left. She made her rounds, greeting my wife and my mom with that big, beaming Cola smile—her signature look that I honestly can’t get enough of. I probably have a dozen photos that look nearly identical, but how do you stop photographing pure joy?

Because she arrived around 8pm, we didn’t have much time before bedtime—but Cola wasn’t about to let the night pass quietly. She was still buzzing with excitement. I could hear her moving around throughout the night, and more than once, she jumped up on my bed. Whether she was trying to cuddle or sneak in a few wake-up kisses, I’m not sure, but she’d snuggle up close for a bit, then hop down, then come back again. She finally stayed with me until I officially got up. I think she just wanted to soak up every second back here with us.

Even though we currently have another doodle in the house who could be Cola’s color-reversed twin (check the photos—you’ll see the resemblance!), Cola made it clear her heart belongs to the humans. She rotated her cuddles and kisses between my wife, my mom, and me—though I’d like to believe I got just a little extra love. 😉

I can’t say this enough: Cola is an absolute dream. The kind of pup you wish you could clone. She’s loving, gentle, obedient (not a single accident in the house!), always comes when called, and that smile, that smile – can turn the worst day around in seconds.
